CHAPTER FIFTEEN

TORONTO, CANADA – SEVENTY-SECOND FLOOR – 3:54 P.M.

“Agents showing up at the mine, that’s troubling,” Julian Drexler said. “Where are we on all this?”

Dorthia was standing across the room from her boss. She used the question as an invitation to sit. The modern office chairs were red padded leather with a white stripe accent.

“I gave them a one-way ticket north. Unfortunately, we lost contact with the plane.”

He pondered the ramifications of her words. Julian was not a man who accepted mistakes very well.

“Did they crash?”

“That’s my belief.” Dorthia pulled a tablet from her gray Hermes purse and flicked it on. She pointed to a spot on the map in northern Quebec, truly remote wilderness.

“The plane’s transponder placed them right here. If anyone survived, the chances of them—”

“I take no chances. Send in a team and clean up your mess. No one gets out.”

“Of course.”

“How many deliveries have we made so far.”

“Three.”

Julian did the rough math in his head. “That puts us just in the black on this thing. Disappointing.”

He stood and rapped his knuckles on the glass desk, thinking. “And let’s close the mine just to be safe.”

“Our client won’t be happy,” Dorthia responded.

“Screw him. Once this all blows over, we can open it back up. He’ll still come running for our product. Besides, I have some other things I could use you on. Get this cleaned up first.”

***

Of the nearly nine million people that live in Quebec, less than forty- four thousand occupy the northern half of the province. It consists of more than 323,000 square miles, making it one of the least populated places on earth. That’s one person for every ten square miles, most of whom live in and around the few small towns that exist along Hudson Bay. The terrain is marsh, water, and forest with granite peaks and valleys, all of it cold. There are very few roads. Most of the country is accessible only by floatplane.

Codi held her hand to her forehead, shielding her face from the sun. They had about two hours before darkness would consume them. This time of the year the sun would set around 10:30 p.m. and would be up again by 5:30 a.m. They’d emptied their canvas bag and surveyed their gear. An eight-inch hunting knife, a small Bic lighter, two water bottles, a roll of duct tape, and a bag of peanuts. There was also a red bandanna, a pair of pliers, a rusty screwdriver, and a handheld flare gun with one cartridge in it. It was better than she had hoped for when she sent Shannon collecting during their crash landing.

“We need to get some type of shelter up. It’s gonna be very cold tonight, somewhere in the high twenties. Joel can you gather enough wood for the fire?” Codi asked.

He nodded and went off to start collecting. Codi smiled, looking after him wearing only his glasses, dress shoes, and damp underwear. It was quite a sight. Shannon and Codi worked as a team to drag and stack logs and limbs beside a large fallen tree.
